Meriwether County

I found myself in Meriwether County today on business and on the way back home was able to take a few pics of the County Courthouse in Greenville, The Methodist Church that my father served in Woodbury and the covered bridge in Imlac. I have wanted to visit the covered bridge that spans the Big Red Oak creek in the Imlac community. I found it on Covered Bridge Road about a mile off Ga Hwy 85 just north of the town of Woodbury. The covered bridge is the oldest ( 1840 ) and with the approach ( 391 total feet ) is the longest in the State of Georgia. I was also able to visit my great grandmothers home place in Alvaton. It was built around 1901 and has been remodeled and is actually for sale.

I have always been interested in the story in the 1950's of John Wallace and the events illustrated in the movie "Murder In Coweta County". I found the jail where Wilson Turner was held and released leading up to the dramatic car ( and truck ) chase that lead up to the murder. It's now a thrift store right off the Meriwether Courthouse square. If you want to learn more about this true story, you can find the book and the made for TV Movie starring Andy Griffin as John Wallace and Johnny Cash as Sheriff Lamar Potts from Coweta County at Amazon.com Click Here
